Because now I feel like a loser.
Sigh.

Work on my car has.... stalled. (no pun intended). On the plus side I took off work so I will have most of two whole weeks to work on it in august. However, confidence is at an all time low. The olds motor has been very uncooperative, and I have spent too much free time on it already.

Overkill makes it seem so easy. You got it doe duuuude :] Just keep chuggin at your own pace.

I’ve only watched the MCM - Roadkill crossover episodes. Very entertaining.
But I gather it’s for personal reasons it’s ruined, not something the show did right?
I’ve stalled on my project a little bit, I’m remodeling my kitchen. But I think I’ve regained some will and determination to work on it. I just had a week or so where I was unmotivated, maybe you just need a break?

You weren’t the losers literally shoveling shit out of a junkyard Mustang.

RIP one year worth of nice weekends.

I’m taking one, mostly because now I don’t even have free time like I did. It’s mostly because I feel like a bum while I watch it. This shit is hard, don’t make it look easy! Damn.

Its just the whole “oh, we’re gonna take a muscle car that’s been abandoned since the 80s and get it running and driving in 48 hrs” meanwhile I get a car that is running and driving, drive it three hours home, and can’t get it inspected within a year and a half.

Time to giver wha. Get on the the horse that threw you. You can only piss with the dick ya got. Get at ‘er

you might notice that many a difficult problem on roadkill is quickly solved via throwing money at it and getting new parts

This is why I’ve come to the realization that I can’t own an old car. I’ve romanticized the ownership of cool old cars. I just don’t have the time, tools, or patience to maintain and fix them.
I’ll take a whole Saturday to detail my car, but at the end of the day, I just do it for the instant pleasure. The car would run fine and take me to work even if it was dirty.
Anyway, hope you get it running!

It will get done eventually. But this is the last old car I buy. I like wrenching, but not when the car is fighting me the whole time.

Haha true, I love how they just tossed a Chevy Bigblock in a 60's Impala in a couple days (MCM episode), like that’s NOT a big deal.
Home reno shows haven’t made me feel like a bum YET, but we’ll see, maybe I’ll get there too.

Don’t forget - these guys started out as noobs with more dreams than wrenches just like the rest of us. FInnegan once took up his parents’ entire garage while taking apart his mini-truck and it took him months to get it back together. And most of Freiburger’s junk hasn’t moved since the first Bush administration. THere is a LOT of TV magic and there has to be some extra hands on occasion. Don’t compare yourself to them too much. Not unless you can get a couple grand’s worth of cash on demand and summon up some free parts at will. This is still TV, not reality.

TBH that’s probably the right way to do it for sanity reasons.

Oh, believe me, I am one stubborn mofo. Just wanted it to be driveable like, last year. Now I am not even sure it will be done this one.

If it makes you feel any better my dad and I have been trying to restore his ‘69 Chevelle for the entirety of my life*. So far we have the engine painted and assembled, and the frame painted and assembled, and that’s it. Granted we’ve built and worked on lots of other things both together and alone, both auto related and not, but this has always keeps being pushed further down the list. We’re slowly getting there but it’s being set aside yet again, although this time it’s so we can build a shop to work on it in, along with my 1950 F3.
*this is not an exaggeration, he bought the car a few years before I was born, tore it all apart, put it in the garage, had kids, rearranged priorities, and didn’t really start working on it until I was in high school. I’m nearly 27 now.

At least then it is understandable because home DIY isn’t a primary hobby. Car stuff is my jam.

I’m not trying to restore (yet D:), I am just trying to get it down the block without it falling apart or getting impounded. I actually kinda like that it looks like crap.

I think I’m almost equally as passionate about kitchens as I am about cars. I’ve been obsessed the same way I’ve been obsessed with my cars, haha.
I haven’t had a project car yet, so that’ll be the true test!

I guess that’s true, I don’t know of any projects Freiburger has finished that the magazine hasn’t paid him to finish lol. Man needs to stop buying junk and start fixing junk.

As someone restoring a ‘70, their method is pissing me off a biiiiit.
You can pull that engine in like an hour and have the engine rebuilt in about a day. Starting it while full of crud really pissed me off.

Pressure washing the interior.
I am so triggered right now.

maybe not then lol. Good luck, kitchens are always one of the best rooms to renovate when they are done. Probably not the most fun to do though.
![]() 07/14/2017 at 16:03 |

Yeah, that is a great way to start a fire. And it definetly took me more than an hour to pull my engine lol.

But thats the part that makes him so relatable!
![]() 07/14/2017 at 16:09 |

I’m just saying don’t get discouraged because it’s taking longer than you would like, things happen, priorities get rearranged, you’ll get it done. As another example I’ve had a dirt bike and and a 3 wheeler apart for close to a year now, all they need are new pistons, the rebuild is super easy. I just brought the cylinder to the machinist yesterday. Seeing them just sitting in the garage depressed me and I wondered if I would ever get them done, but I finally got a little extra cash and should have them done next week.
Keep in mind to that this is what the Roadkill guys do, basically for a living, they’ve got tons of support, all the right tools, and loads of experience. When playing with cars is your day job you tend to get things done. Like you mentioned in another comment too, Frieburger’s personal projects move pretty slowly, Finnegan on the other hand....

Ignoring it and breaking down several miles later is another of their favorite methods.

Thanks! Best of luck regaining your motivation, I think it’ll come back!

Once the motor is apart and back together I think I will feel much better. too many unknows I think at this point.
![]() 07/14/2017 at 16:26 |

Yeah. No way am I ever going to give up on this thing. I just got a lot of what ifs hanging over my head right now. I do feel as if I know enough to get the job done, but it may be out of my hands and the car may need to wait for a new engine. Once the motor is back in one piece I think I will be better from that point onward.
![]() 07/14/2017 at 16:42 |

Yeah, I bet the next big piece of progress you make will be motivation

I really struggled to watch a lot of the more recent ones because of this. It lost a lot of the relatable feel and became much more “our sponsors gave us thousands worth of parts that we throw into a crappy looking car”
![]() 07/15/2017 at 20:35 |
|
The car was ruined, that’s why it was sitting in a junk yard so long. And it’s not in their interests to restore it all properly. They wanted to get it running and so they did!

It was fuuuucked
![]() 07/15/2017 at 20:37 |

And it’s damn fine TV ;)
I think Freiburger is just a patina guy. He likes them a bit beat up. And he’s not the kind of guy to spend $10k on paint and bodywork, at least not for the majority of cars he wants to keep.
Which is cool really. If you want to own old muscle without spending millions of dollars...getting over them needing to be perfect is a big step along that path.

They’re fine with sketchy, but if it is clearly (or at least apparently) stopping them from running, they tend to utilize the parts cannon
